October 21, 2009

‘Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?’ He said to him, ‘“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. 39And a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.”
Matthew 22:36-38

Hibernation season is here. While we humans don’t technically sleep through winter, (and I bet that many of us would love to) we do have our own way of withdrawing from the world. The initial chill of autumn sends most of us outdoors to carve pumpkins and watch falling leaves, but eventually we are pulled back toward warm fireplaces and conversation. This transitional season draws us into greater contact with each other as we are closed in together for the winter. And we get to spend more time face to face with the things that really matter.

The most important things in our lives will have a heartbeat. They will be the kind that can give and receive love. Whether your family is large, small, furry or feathered you probably already know this truth; that the relationships we nurture will in turn sustain us.

This season gives us some wonderful opportunities to practice this principle. Halloween, my personal favorite, is just around the corner. I am looking forward with embarrassing enthusiasm to dressing my kids in costumes and taking them trick-or-treating. Thanksgiving and Christmas are holidays that are difficult to truly celebrate alone. They beg for company and connection. That’s the nature of holiday – meaning holy day – to draw us toward what is important. To celebrate the love of God and the love of other people.

As we move into this new season, I pray that our activities and our schedules will be true reflections of what is most important to us. That we will demonstrate by our calendars the things that we really love. That we will embrace what really matters in our lives as we feel the heartbeat of the season.

Blessings,
Nancy

Luke 22: 39-46

39Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." 41He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." 43An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[a]
45When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46"Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation."

Scripture: Jeremiah 1:4-12
Sermon: The Word of Life

Now the word of the LORD came to me saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew
you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to
the nations.” Then I said, “Alas, Lord GOD! Behold, I do not know how to speak,
because I am a youth.” But the LORD said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am a youth, because
everywhere I send you, you shall go, and all that I command you, you shall speak.
“Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you,” declares the LORD.
Then the LORD stretched out His hand and touched my mouth, and the LORD said to me,
"Behold, I have put My words in your mouth. “See, I have appointed you this day over
the nations and over the kingdoms, to pluck up and to break down, to destroy and to
overthrow, to build and to plant.” The Almond Rod and Boiling Pot. The word of the
LORD came to me saying, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” And I said, “I see a branch of
an almond tree.” Then the LORD said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching
over My word to perform it.”

Sermon: What's Driving You? Living Your Purpose

Romans 12:1-2; 13:11-12

I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God - what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light;
